Now I am real old, don't you know

This morning, outside my flat, a small dinosaur was having a tantrum. A mouse was carrying a guitar on its back. A superhero was having some sort of wardrobe malfunction fixed by its mum.

I think it's fancy-dress day at Montpelier School :)

As I walked down to the tube, I passed pirates, more superheroes, a cowgirl, and a gratifyingly small number of princesses. Also a tiny Japanese girl wearing a black dress, a massive red bow on top of her head, and carrying a garden broom (I have no idea).

A number of children trailed past wearing the uniform red caps of a different school with a distinct air of martyrdom.

The Japanese girl is cosplaying Kiki from "Kiki's delivery service"

My thought exactly. Although she should probably also have a sarcastic black cat. Seems like this can't be world book day, though, 'cos that was yesterday (at least at our kids' school)..

It's neat how instantly recognisable the character is from a very brief description...

Especially since I clearly had no idea what I was looking at :)

I'll take your word for it!

Although in the circs, I'm not completely sure I accept "cosplaying" over "dressed as" ;)

Some schools do World Book Day on Friday to make it easier (let the kids run wild at the end of the week etc). Sounds like that's what that is... though creatively and generously interpreting "book", no doubt.

While I wouldn't have let a youngster go as the Grey of 50 Shades and the school made him change into James Bond (hardly a moral paragon either) and banned him from photos, that same school allowed a member of staff to go as a mass murderer. Alan Bennett was right about the English.

In case anyone else is bewildered by this comment, read this news story (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-manchester-31760713) :)

I saw a Hermione Granger who looked more like Hermione than the actual character
