You. Yes, you! Have you ever, to the best of your knowledge, ever played Dixit with me?

At the weekend I was visiting friends. They proposed, in the evening, that we played Dixit which one of them had acquired for Christmas. We read through the rules quickly, and it didn't seem difficult. It also didn't seem in the least bit familiar.

Tokens were popped out of their pristine sheets, cards were de-cellophaned and dealt, I looked at my hand and immediately thought: I've played this before. I don't remember the game, as such, but I remember the beautiful, whimsical illustrations.

Now, I play boardgames pretty rarely these days. And it's a moderately recent game. My first thought was that perhaps [livejournal.com profile] maviscruet introduced me to it last year, but I foresightedly wrote down what games I'd played then. It wasn't on the list. Similarly with [livejournal.com profile] ebee's epic gaming party last year. (I omitted to write about her party this year, it seems, but it was sufficiently recent that I can actually use real memory to recall it.)

This is obviously not in the least important. And I doubt whether - even if it was you - you're likely to remember specifically. But it's bothering me.

In related news, does anyone have an opinion on Dixit?

Clearly the best bit about the game is the pictures, some of which are absolutely beautiful. It seems, though, that it's a system that's very easy to game. I was playing with a married couple, and since the goal with three players is basically to get exactly one player to identify the card correctly, it's just a matter of picking shared reference points. They got several through veiled references to storybooks they've read their daughter. I communicated directly with one of them by picking suitable song lyrics (and missed almost every one that they tried to bat back my way). It's kind of fun, but feels inherently like you're cheating.

I'd also be interested to know if it has much replayability value with the same group of people. With three players we seemed to whip through the deck of cards really quite quickly, and started seeing repeats by the end of the second game.
