Because we're all so very twenty-first centu-ary

The more observant may notice that I am not in Whitby. This is because I was far too excited about going to see Frank Turner at the Kentish Town Forum this evening.

I shall spend quite a lot of tomorrow galloping up the A1.

Although I'm a bit confused about how to do WGW these days. Once upon a time I knew about a million people there, and since they were all in the Elsinore all the time, it was dead easy to catch up.

These days, lots of people have stopped attending. And the people who are there probably aren't using LJ any more, so I don't know that they're there. And even if I do know, they're probably exercising free-will and being in one of any number of pubs at any given time. So I can't find them.

Yes, yes, I know people have phones[*] these days. Trouble is, there's lots of people whom I don't necessarily know all that well, so wouldn't contact them to demand social engagement. But if I ran into them, I might stop and have a pint.

So... er... yes. If you're going to be there, do endeavour to run into me. We can have a pint! (Other beverages are probably available.)

[*] On which note, I shall endeavour to actually bring mine with me this time.

Talking of Pints, what happened to Pintwatch? - or did Pintwatch suffer a fatal heart attack after seeing the price of beer in West London?

Pintwatch found the medium of LJ oppressive, so has taken itself off to twitter (https://twitter.com/pintwatch) :)

It seemed like a good idea, since beer reviews could be done on the fly, in pubs. Sadly, Pintwatch is now very aware of just how many pubs are (a) signal-free zones and (b) have shit wifi. It also sometimes gets a bit distracted and forgets to tweet.

Am curious to know what you thought of the support acts.

The logistics of getting out of work and into London meant I missed George Frakes. I really enjoyed Larry and his Flask, though. They were great fun, silly, easy to sing along to and entertaining. And had a surprise euphonium!

Were you also there?

[personal profile] eniel 2013-04-26 11:12 am (UTC)(link)
Yes. Really liked Larry & his Flask... although I couldn't help but cringe when the double bass player stood on his intrument... *grins* Frakes was good, but I think his style was a bit too quiet for the hyped atmosphere in the crowd, and it didn't work as well for me.

I'd done some listening to Frakes online beforehand, and had speculated that (particularly as support) he risked getting talked over at a big venue like that. I'd be interested to see him somewhere smaller/quieter, though.

I was just thinking last night about how it would be good to go back to Whitby, for the town if nothing else. Hope you have a great time.

I was, thank you! Although I was a bit late to it because I was too busy enjoying tasty Thai food :)

Thanks for good company and for letting me share your room!

Funny, I remember thinking that last time I went to Whitby, and that was several years ago now. I'd go in the Elsinore and Little Angel and know no-one, even though I knew plenty of people around but just not where they were at any given point. It were better in the good ole days...

Wasn't everything better in the good ole days :)

I'd have thought someone might have come up with a Whitby app by now to allow you to track everyone's location... except signal is still quite poor in many places, so it probably still wouldn't help!
