Well, as I rather expected, my bento didn't make it into the 20 finalists of the competition :)

The winners and finalists are pretty impressive, though, so I don't exactly feel like I was robbed. If you're the sort of person who likes looking at pretty lunches, then they're asking people to vote for their favourite finalists to determine the ranking order.

Nutritionally speaking, I think I prefer mine over some of the finalists' - there's one that seems to be made of nothing but pasta. At least one (the cherry blossom one, if you're looking) is so artistically impressive that I can't imagine daring to eat it. Some of them are awesome, though, and look both pretty and delicious. I think maybe I'll stick to trying to cook tasty food, and sod the appearance :)

164 is the clear winner for me, with 56 and 161 runners up...

...although to some extent I think I must not have a good grasp of the objectives, since some of the finalists look really weak to me. Basically just fairly mundane bento boxes with the saturation slider pulled waaay up on the resulting photo. :-/

Yup, I'd more or less agree. Since the voting only required me to say which ones I liked, I hadn't picked a winner but 164 was quite a stand out.

(I thought the Pooh bento (63) was impressive and kind of fun, but not really how I want my lunch to appear!)

Agreed. Also, from my perspective the point is to arrange the food in an artistic way. The Pooh one relies heavily on items that are themselves little miniature artworks, which isn't quite the same thing.

(Bother, this is making me want to create bentos now!)

23 is the winner for me because it has jelly-bean colours and looks like a good range of foods for lunch. 164 would be the winner if it had a little protein; it looks very stylish and inviting.

Re 161, the chocolate-strawberries in pastry look yummy but would be challenging to eat with chopsticks. I reckon I'd use my fingers.
