I was dishing out cold stuff the other day and (unusually) we have both Hellmann's mayonnaise and Heinz salad cream open at present. (Ordinarily, if I want mayo I'll make it but I was making an industrial quantity of sarnies for 9-10 people in a hurry last weekend. As nalsa observers above, you can't make salad cream ;) )
Anyway, I asked t'other half which he preferred, assuming it would be mayonnaise because that's the proper, right answer. Only common northerners (like me) like salad cream. Actually he turned out not to have very much opinion, but was surprised that I viewed mayonnaise as the expected answer. So I thought a highly scientific survey was called for.
Presumably parents have a well-rehearsed (or, at least easily-learned) script to deal with people who are shagging drugs and stealing boys. If you're going to go round being all conservative with your salad produce then there simply isn't a good, well-worn parental groove to drop into. Perhaps if you'd put amphetamines in the mayonnaise you'd have won the class and everyone would have been happy...
