They're coming down the stairs...

You know those word games that sometimes start up, and before you know where you are your brain has been wholly sucked into them, and you can't stop ? A good example is the telling of fish related jokes - a couple of weeks ago at a fish restaurant we got into a rut where no one could break away from them. Everytime we declared an intention to stop it, there'd be a small, guilty sounding voice cracking another one.

We found another one last night.

What do different kinds of animals wear ?

The original suggestion was "llamas in pyjamas". Hotly followed by "goats in coats", "cats in hats" and "armadillos in espadrillos".

Then we got on to the more dubious "okapi in khaki". And my "kangaroos in dungarees" got disallowed, which I thought was most unfair.

And I got into trouble for muttering "rabbits in habits" and "alligators in gators" while we were halfway through rapper figures. And now I'm getting emails saying things like:

Ocelots in party frocks ?????

AARGGHHHHH !!!! HELP me, someone, I can't STOP...

Don't say I didn't warn you.

Hairs in pairs

(Don't say you haven't invited your own doom!)

[identity profile] venta.livejournal.com 2003-07-04 04:23 am (UTC)(link)
Hairs aren't animals.
</pedant>

(taken me four goes to post this sodding comment correctly)

[identity profile] venta.livejournal.com 2003-07-04 04:24 am (UTC)(link)
Come to mention it, pairs aren't clothes either.
Are you sure you've got the idea here :)

(What I'm really hoping for is a suggestion for cougars...)

[identity profile] wimble.livejournal.com 2003-07-04 04:30 am (UTC)(link)
Oh. There are instructions? And I'm supposed to read them? Whoops.

[identity profile] wimble.livejournal.com 2003-07-04 05:35 am (UTC)(link)
A vole in kohl
Voles in stoles
Minks in mink
coots in boots

The cougar request has currently produced "cougar in a tuba", with the requirement that you first cut holes in the tuba, so it can be work as a dress. [livejournal.com profile] narenek interjected, "Nah. Just stuff it down the bell."

Best I can do after an hour or so is:
Cougars in Bermudas

D'oh.Alright.

Hares in pairs.

And since I've had a chance to think.

Bears in Hares (two for the price of one)
Voles on poles (and other assorted bad taste songs)
Dogs in clogs
Stoats in coats
Weasels on easels
Minks in pink
Armadillo on your pillow

Somebody else's turn

A very very bad series of jokes involving woad was inflicted on me by [livejournal.com profile] onebyone and [livejournal.com profile] metame recently.
I'm probably going to regret mentioning that...

[identity profile] wimble.livejournal.com 2003-07-04 04:28 am (UTC)(link)
Not quite in the original theme, but close enough

Climb up Snowdon,
With your woad on,
Never mind
If you get rained
Or blowed on.

(To the tune of "Men of Harlech")

Go it, ancient Bs!

(that's a favourite of mine :)

Re:

[identity profile] leathellin.livejournal.com 2003-07-04 04:32 am (UTC)(link)
You're on the woad to hell...
Assuming it has frozen over and moved anyway to manage to be at the top of Snowdon.

Althogether now...

[identity profile] bateleur.livejournal.com 2003-07-04 06:33 am (UTC)(link)
"We're on a wooooooad to nowhere !"

With apologies to Talking Heads.

And just to stay vaguely on topic: Moose in a Burnoose !

Re: Althogether now...

[identity profile] onebyone.livejournal.com 2003-07-04 08:59 am (UTC)(link)

Yes, yes, we've been down this woad before.

Me ? Stir ?

I'm sure The Gibbon is far too surly to read such a frivolous thread, unless some rotten snitch tips him off :)

Having actually checked the OED, the best we can produce is a very week:
An angry marmott in a pelmet.

But who'd tip her off?

dragonflies in kipper ties

[identity profile] wimble.livejournal.com 2003-07-04 07:03 am (UTC)(link)
And yes, we've looked these up. They really are in the OED.

bobolink in nothink
skink in anythink
soldier ants in camo pants
bats in spats
yaks in anoraks
fabulous rocs in bobby socks.

We haven't looked these up though:

nothink is in the OED ?

Cowses in blouses.
Foxes in sockses.

Yup, as a variant spelling of nothing.

I had, but I've started again.

Reminds me of the inane children's show 'Bananas in Pajamas.'

Was it just a very slow news day in the UK? :)

How about--
cats in spats
Flies in ties
Nut Hatches with Pocketwatches...

Which was nicked from a children's rhyme. In fact, if you look at the title of [livejournal.com profile] venta's entry...
