It's Friday, it's some time after 3 o'clock. It's time to go underneath the covers (with the lights out).

I always recommend listening to a cover version without knowing what or who it is, so click on the link before reading ahead...

Today's cover version [link to mp3 download expired]

That was the Richard Cheese covering Holiday in Cambodia, originally by The Dead Kennedys

This cover comes from the delightfully-named Lounge Against The Machine, by Richard Cheese. Mr Cheese's oeuvre consists entirely (as far as I'm aware) of (to quote the record sleeve) "swingin' covers of alternative standards".
Now, I'd file Richard Cheese mentally in the same category as Weird Al Yankovich: clever, but you wouldn't want to listen to it all that often. Probably slightly less so than Weird Al; I can cope with Richard Cheese about once a year, but once through Bohemian Polka is probably enough for a lifetime.

As you might expect, an album of 16 covers is a mixed bag. And the covers are rather underwhelming when you don't know the originals. Some songs work better than others after they've been lounged all over: Come Out And Play, Closer, Creep and What's My Age Again are all surprisingly successful. Others (Papa Roach's Last Resort, or Smack My Bitch Up) fall a bit flat and are of curiosity value only. I haven't really investigated thoroughly yet, but I suspect the songs which work best are those which have a fairly rigid verse/chorus structure. Once you get into all that freeform nu-metal screaming it all goes a bit wrong.

Right. I've been very good, so ChrisC is taking me to Butlins, Minehead for the weekend. No, really. I'm quite excited about it.
