My loneliness is killing me

It's Friday, it's about 3 o'clock. It's time to go underneath the covers (with the lights out).

I always recommend listening to a cover version without knowing what or who it is, so click on the link before reading ahead...

Today's cover version [link to mp3 expired]

Mark Ronson (featuring Tiggers) covering the Toxic, originally scored by Britney Spears

My love of Toxic is an embarassment I've already faced up to, by the way, so no mocking :)

Anyway, yes. Mark Ronson. His covers album, Version was the big news of 2007. Some of the tracks - like the cover of the Zutons' Valerie, featuring Amy Winehouse, went on to eclipe their originals. Many of the tracks didn't see much radioplay - I can't actually remember whether or not this one did.

It's a really interesting selection of covers, by the way. The Smiths, Radiohead, the Jam, the Kaiser Chiefs... quite a mixed bag. And the slightly inspired cover of Maximö Park's song Apply Some Pressure, featuring the singer from Maximö Park. The standard's pretty high, and I definitely recommend purchasing yourself a copy.

Not bad!
Based on the title I was half expecting this.

Nice! Only just got round to following the link and I'm quite impressed.

Had to kill this one after about ten seconds.

Not that it's bad you understand, but downtempo covers/remixes of fast tunes drive me absolutely fingernails-down-a-blackboard nuts.

That's a shame. Aztec Camera's version of Van Halen's Jump is brilliant, but for that reason I guess you'd not like it. :(

Having just listened to some of it on YouTube I love the guy's voice - much nicer than the original - but as you predicted it's not my thing at all.

I hadn't heard of that before - it's fantastic!

The versions I can see on YouTube are slightly faster than the one I'm thinking of, too. But it's a great mix of singer and unexpected song.

Dammit, your cover is better than mine :)

I guess you'd hate Marilyn Manson's Sweet Dreams then :)

[identity profile] bateleur.livejournal.com 2010-11-19 05:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Seeing as I've never yet met a Marilyn Manson track I liked enough to listen to twice...

(Also, Sweet Dreams is a much loved track for me, so the bar is set high!)

Gosh. That's... different (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m6VojYGrnpg)...

(Entertainingly, type 'Marilyn Manson' into Youtube search and 'Sweet Dreams' is the first suggested video.)

I think I prefer Hard-Fi, but I do love Version so this isn't bad either. :)

Nope....Not a fan of either. Though it would not be unknown of me to end up dancing to something like britany or gaga at Wendyhouse near the end of the night !

Ah, I have the Mark Ronson album, so I recognised this (though embarrassingly I failed to realise that's what it was!) - by the end I'd definitely worked out it was probably originally the Britney Spears song of the same name though :)

I rather like it.
