Aug. 6th, 2010 07:41 pmIt's Friday, it's considerably after 3 o'clock, but hey, I'm on holiday. I'm also not reading email, by the way. Back Sunday. Anyway, it's time to go underneath the covers (with the lights out).
I always recommend listening to a cover version without knowing what or who it is, so click on the link before reading ahead...
Today's cover version [link to mp3 expired]
That was the Senseless Things covering Apache, originally by The Shadows.
Apache, by the Shadows: a bunch of blokes, with guitars, playing a tune. This cover: a bunch of blokes, with guitars, playing the same tune. It never ceases to amaze me the different sounds you can get out of guitars. Yes, I know pedals and things get involved, but that there can be such a distinctive "Shadows sound" and such a totally different sound coming out of basically the same instruments is a thing of wonder. Well, it is if you're me.
Mind you, if you're me the Senseless Things are doing that walk while playing it as well.
This comes from the amazing Ruby Trax album; forty cover versions to celebrate NME's fortieth anniversary. If you like cover versions, you should seriously consider it. If you also like your 90s indie you should drop everything you're doing and buy a copy right now. We'll probably have another track or two from it appearing here before the year's out.

Date: 2010-08-06 07:32 pm (UTC)I find this cover a bit annoying, because they have tweaked some of the notes, to no good purpose afaich. Nice idea though.

Date: 2010-08-07 09:02 am (UTC)Erm, so *obviously* it makes sense to bid 25 quid for it on vinyl on ebay? Erm. I do expect to be outbid in the remaining day it's running mind.
