D'you know, I was forced to concede earlier than I didn't really know what a rimshot was and went to look it up. According to Wikipedia, it isn't anyway, it's a sting (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sting_%28percussion%29).
Aha, makes sense. Well, this may have to be one of those situations where general usage overcomes technical meaning, as [FX: sting] would really be hopeless as an interjection.
Oh, I agree, I'd have been totally baffled by that.
I think I'd always associated the phrase "rimshot" with the idea of a basketball hitting the hoop on the way in, ie something that does what it needs to but only by the skin of its teeth.
Which it turns out is exactly nothing like what the rest of the world uses it to mean :)
