The instructions also recommend you wash it with plain soap and hot water occasionally while it's in use I tend not to have plain soap lying around, so I use handwash or shower gel or whatever. And I can pass on to you and your readers this hard-won knowledge: using anti-bacterial handwash is not a good idea. I wash mine every empty if I can, and I've occasionally tried to formulate a way to ask work to supply non-anti-bac handwash, but have not come up with any reasons which don't involve a lengthy conversation I don't really want to have with my colleagues.
