I've heard virtually none of the contenders this year. For some reason Elbow and Embrace have always been confused in my head, so I was disgusted to hear they'd won.
ChrisC sent me a link which uses Elbow's cover of Independent Woman (http://www.rathergood.com/independent_woman/) last night, at which point I realised I was thinking of completely the wrong band.
I was a bit surprised becuse I was expecting something less mainstream to win this time round. But I guess it's a worthy winner, just not a very inspiring one.
Um... if you listen to Elbow you might start again with the thoughts.
Didn't like them when I saw them at Reading a couple of years ago. But firstly I only know one track off this album, and maybe the rest of it isn't quite so Coldplayesque. Secondly, being Coldplayesque has never been a bar to Mercury success (or at least nomination) in the past. Still, could be worse: they've nominated Keane before. At least Elbow are probably trying not to be dull.
I suspect that in ten years time Elbow will not be the stand-out album of this batch of nominations. They never give it to Radiohead, in a kind of Martin Scorsese, Jimmy White way, but even so I'm sure they could have done better.
