Er...

From the MENSA website:

"1 in 50 people have an IQ in the top 2% that makes them eligible to join Mensa. "

Presumably with the implication "and if you needed to be told this, you're not one of them". Pah.

Top 2% of the population or top 2% of a bell curve?

Didn't specify, that sentence was all there was.
I was assuming the former.

Yup, bodding round the site a bit more:

"the only requirement for membership is that an individual’s IQ falls within the top 2% of the population. "

bodding?

Reminds me of the Watchdog exopose of the Persona contraception method:

Watchdog: 400 women have gotten pregnant using your product. That's shocking!

UniLever: We claim 96% success rate... with an exstablished user base of 10,000... do the math

Given my* impression of the general response to MENSA**, why are you looking?

Just out of curiousity?

* Which doesn't mean it's universal, or even correct.
** If we're intelligent enough to join MENSA, we're intelligent enough not to want to.

agreed. I joined at 14, after my parents decided I should. I left as soon as my subs ran out. IQ tests mean fvery little anyway.

Browsing to random sites to check some of Tao's software :)

But 1 in 1,000 of those above the 98th percentile can afford the membership and wouldn't rather buy something pretty and/or shiny and/or food.

mensa

It's a generalisation of course, but the few people who I've met who I knew to be mensa members were also losers (and usually bald as well).
