Lying in my bed I hear the clock tick

On Fridays this year, we ask...

What's in the Box?

The Box in question is the glovebox of my car, home to my extremely motley tape collection. By the time I owned a car with a tape player tapes were on the way out and most of my music was in CD format. However, charity shops were practically giving tapes away, which meant that I bought rapaciously and eclectically. A half-remembered 80s band who once released a single I'd liked a little ? A band I'd vaguely heard of ? An unknown group with good cover art ? Bring them on.

Of course, the net result is that I've ended up with a tape collection which any music-lover would be slightly ashamed of. There was a relatively narrow window (late 70s to later 80s) when tapes were big news, and my horde represents that. However, in amongst the terrible pop I've found some gems and I reckon its time to come clean about my guilty musical secrets.

However, I am easily confused. I took Friday off from work, and was thus confused and thought all day yesterday it was Saturday. So I forgot to look in The Box. Belatedly, we have:

Cyndi Lauper - Twelve Deadly Cyns

One thing to note: I was incredibly disappointed to note that this album does not have 12 tracks. If you examine the album cover closely and read the small print, it's actually called Twelve Deadly Cyns... and Then Some which I feel is a weak get-out. If you're going to choose a title like that you should stick with it.

I'm fairly sure this is an album not a compilation, but it does seem to have all the Cyndi Lauper biggies on it (I Drove All Night, Time After Time, Girls Just Wanna Have Fun...). And, I have to admit, it turns out I know rather more Cyndi Lauper songs than I thought I did.

She does have a weird voice, though. It's sort of part soul-singer, part cartoon. I don't remember ever noticing that before.

However, I think the outstanding track is She Bop. With its driving rhythm and silly lyrics, I don't know why it isn't still an 80s dance-floor filler.

ISTR the original US version was just Twelve Deadly Cyns, with the extra tracks absent. (And yes, it is a compilation. Although it's also true to say that most of the famous songs are on the 'real' album She's So Unusual.)

If they picked a number inconsistent with the number of tracks, why not "7"?

I recall Jonathan King dismissing Madonna as a Cyndi Lauper wannabe. He may have been wrong about that thing and one other.
