I have just had a bowl of pasta and Dolmio "Stir-In Sauce" for tea. (Bear with me, I've been ill in bed for a few days and wasn't up to feats of culinary genius).

I don't wish to knock Mr Dolmio's Stir-In sauce. As cheap and cheerful convenience food goes, it's not at all bad. It was "Sun-dried Tomato Light", if you want to know.

The instructions on the packet suggest one should "... stir one pot of sauce into 300g of hot freshly cooked pasta." Which is fine. It then goes on to add:

"Perfect for two people looking for a bit more excitement."

What ? More excitement than not stirring reduced-fat tomato sauce into your pasta ? How can people live at such speed ?

Believe me, stirring reduced-fat tomato sauce into pasta is the very zenith of excitement and living on the edge up here in West Lancashire!
We get sweaty palms and go all weak at the knees if there's a pattern on our kitchen roll, by 'eck.

I habitually read “sundried” as the past tense of the hypothetical verb “to sundry” derived from the adjective.

I always think of those unimaginative souls who lie on beaches in search of the perfect tan. Fine when you're young, but exposure to sunlight, especially UV in our thinning atmosphere, leads to premature aging of the skin. Great if you want the weathered fisherman look!

As someone who has sat there desperately trying to write copy for dozens of near identical, extraordinarily boring products I can tell you that this is the kind of thing that is actually bloody hard to avoid. You've done the first ten bottles, and looking at the eleventh you think - hey, this one has slightly less dull ingredients than number nine, and you're doomed.

Still, that's the reason there's supposed to be someone else in the chain stopping these things getting through. (for that matter, coming back the next day usually sees you catch the worst failings (Oh my god, did I really write that!)).

Aren't they the people who used to show idyllic italian scenes of happy/stylish people eating pasta outide and shouting ciao! at each other and then at the end a caption would come up saying: "made in holland"?

There was a well known Italian brand of dried pasta, and probably still is, who shipped their wheat to Britain for milling and processing into pasta. It was then shipped back to Italy for packaging, and finally exported to Britain for the UK market. How do I know? My brother used to deliver tanker loads of the stuff to different UK processing plants.
