It's Friday! It's about three o'clock! It's time to Boogie At Your Desk!

Friday afternoons need a little something. I think they need a Top Tune. Something to make you shuffle in your seat and, if possible, Boogie At Your Desk. I endeavour to fill this gap on occasional Fridays.

I'm not claiming that any track provided to enable At-Desk Boogying is one of the world's best or most profound pieces of music. It will, however, be a tune which makes me smile, and which has at some stage made me surreptitiously Boogie At My Desk.

Desks are not compulsory, of course. Feel free to boogie through your office, in your bedroom, round your lab, across your classroom, on the train - wherever you find yourself on a Friday afternoon.

If you like the track, go out and buy the album it belongs to - I'll try and recommend a suitable CD to purchase for any BAYD track.

My Life Story - 12 Reasons Why I Love Her

A few weeks ago, ChrisC was flicking idly through my copy of Q magazine. "Look!" I said, pointing over his shoulder, "there's a My Life Story gig!"

I was joking, of course. There was an advert there, with My Life Story written in the distinctive mismatched font, but I assumed it was for a posthumous best-of or something since they split up in 2001. "Hang on," I amended, "there actually is a My Life Story gig!" There is a posthumous best-of out in June, but to promote it they're reforming to play one show.

I hit the web. There followed much wailing and gnashing of teeth as I found the gig already sold out. There was some rejoicing when I found tickets on eBay, sold by someone who didn't appear to be a tout. Accordingly, tonight I shall be partying like it's 1996.

My Life Story were the Polyphonic Spree of the mid 90s; unlikely misfit contenders in the Britpop scene. Mixing big band, swing and poppy hooks, they went on the road with a standard line-up of twelve and an epic, orchestral sweep. Violins, violas, cellos, horns and not a guitar in sight. It is claimed that tonight's line-up features "twelve original members", but since they have a cast of thousands to choose from, I don't know which twelve.

Incidentally, they also claim to have released (in 1999) the first internet-only single, the rather marvellously titled If You Can't Live Without Me Then Why Aren't You Dead Yet? Sadly, it's not actually all that great a song.

My Life Story albums are tricky beggars to track down, though Amazon does now seem to have used copy of Golden Mile, the most popular and poppiest album. I'd highly recommend both that and their first album, Mornington Crescent.
