It's Spring. Yay.

Time for the hayfever season...

Time to start trying this year's ludicrous hayfever remedy. Anyone got any suggestions ? (So far I've tried antihistamines of various kinds, Neal's yard anti-allergy vitamin tablets, lots of honey...)

People sometimes criticise me for not liking summer. I tell them: I have no quarrel with summer.

Yet as soon as I go outside in it, it makes me sneeze. It makes my eyes run, and itch horribly. On top of that it burns me, even if I wear high-factor sun cream. And then, to add insult to injury, it causes me to get bitten by innumerable nasties.

It started it!

Where is the song "Don't You Know" from?

Seems to be off the 1987 album "Freaks". I've not heard the song before, but was rather taken with it.

I'm re-remembering that launchcast is a Good Thing. Though a slightly Less Good Thing than is used to be, as it now has annoying audio adverts :(

Euphrasia!

For the eyes, anyway. You can either get little tablets from a chemist or (as I remember) a tincture of the stuff from Neal's Yard, which had the advantage of involving drops of alcohol.

Hmm, I might look into that.

To be honest, though, I don't mind the itchy eyes so much, it's the runny nose I really want rid of.

The Gibbon sympathises, but adds that Gibbons look very silly without fur, and as such object to the requirements of the season to take said furry layers off.

The Gibbon takes personal offence at the stupid season system. Why could The Gibbon not have been born on a planet with a perfectly circular orbit and no axial tilt? Worst. Planet. Ever.

Sympathy, but no suggestions

The prescription version of an over-the-counter drug has worked for me the last few summers (I can't remember the name, but as my symptoms aren't due to start till May I presume we're allergic to different pollens).

What frustrates me is the lifestyle advice, which is effectively 'Stay indoors. Keep windows closed, especially on hot days. If you must travel outside, wear a biohazard suit and take a shower at your destination.' It's not easy to follow.

For the sneezing you could try Beconase? It's a steriod-y type nasal spray - squirt morning and night. In my experience it worked really well, though it probably means a doctor's appointment.

I've been sneezing a bit, but my hayfever's declined in previous years a bit *crosses fingers* and *touches wood*

Oh dear. Are you going outside tomorrow?

Because I can see a slight problem with maskmaking if you have a severely-runny nose. Not something completely unworkable, but difficult nonetheless.

You have my sympathy. I'm afraid I don't know any good remedies.

I don't like summer either. Once the temperature tops about 25 degrees, I wilt (and I burn too - these days I carry factor 30 and 35 around). Ditto winter and the temperature dropping below about 10 degrees.

Autumn and Spring are very nice though. ;-)

I tried that a few years ago - which required a lot of bravery to get over the "ewwwwww, sticking something up my nose" factor.

It might have worked, but since one of the listed side effect is runny nose and irritation, it was hard to tell :)

Ah, Yes...

Ah, yes, hayfever. I know a little about that...

I did find one drug that actually seemed to work, though I can't guarantee to remember the name at the moment. Benodryl Plus, possibly? Something like that. I'll have to check when I get home...

Hmm.

It was the prescription version of Benadryl that worked for me last year, too.

Which brings me to my other point - getting bulk prescriptions of antihistamines really is a lot cheaper than buying the things from the chemist.

Syphilis, it makes your nose fall off.

I'm not outside today :(

Hopefully it won't be too bad... if it is, you'll just have to help me drown my sorrows instead :)

Freaks...

Is a quite lovely album. Many fine songs. Freaks is one of my favourite albums ever in fact, though I rarely listen to it - memory's enough.

I have a copy of it somewhere (possibly packed), and I strongly suspect my brother does too.

Oh, and if you've not listened to Separations (their following album) I'd strongly recommend it too.
Don't You Want me Anymore and She's Dead stand out as 'singles'.

You can always try going to the Southern hemisphere:

1. Its winter (so minimal pollen).
2. There's very little that any of us are sensitised to there.

I await with non-enthusiasm the arrival of my own runny nose. If its anytnhing like the railways, with luck it might be cancelled this year (I try telling myself this every year, but it never works).
