Come on boy, I wanna dance now
It's Friday! It's about three o'clock! It's time to Boogie At Your Desk!
Friday afternoons need a little something. I think they need a Top Tune. Something to make you shuffle in your seat and, if possible, Boogie At Your Desk. I'll be endeavouring to fill this gap some Fridays this year.
I'm not claiming that any track provided to enable At-Desk Boogying is one of the world's best or most profound pieces of music. It will, however, be a tune which makes me smile, and which has at some stage made me surreptitiously Boogie At My Desk.
Desks are not compulsory, of course. Feel free to boogie through your office, in your bedroom, round your lab, across your classroom, on the train - wherever you find yourself on a Friday afternoon.
If you like the track, go out and buy the album it belongs to - I'll try and recommend a suitable CD to purchase for any BAYD track.
This link will expire at some point in the future.
Today you are invited to Boogie At Your Desk to:
Lush - Hypocrite
(Or if you don't want to download a file with an mp3 suffix, click here for a zipped version.)
I've never yet voluntarily taken part in any form of karaoke. However, I've always said that if ever such a thing became necessary, I'd choose to sing a Lush single. They're very singalongable, decent tunes, and have suitably cynical lyrics that you can spit them out with pleasure.
A further plus point is that I could say "sure, I'm up for karaoke, so long as I can sing Ladykillers or Single Girl" safe in the knowledge that there is probably not a karaoke bar in Britain which has either of them.
Apart from the fact that budget indie has never really been karaoke's bag, Lush seem to have been well and truly forgotten. A recent investigation revealed that neither HMV nor Virgin in Oxford, nor Fopp in Reading, can produce a Lush CD between them. Indeed, the assistant in Virgin, bless his little twenty-year-old socks, looked completely blank and asked who Lush were.
Which is a shame. Amazon to the rescue, as usual: they'll happily provide you with the best-of for under £7. If you buy that you'll miss out on some of the album-track gems (like the whimsically ethereal The Childcatcher, but you'll pick up some stonking singles.
As a point of interest, the surprisingly good Beautiful South covers album features a cover of the bitchy Ciao!, originally by Lush and Jarvis Cocker. Which is good, but actually just serves to remind me what a top song the original was.
My apologies that BAYD has become something of a 90s-fest of late. I blame these modern-day art-rock bands for just not being as Boogysome as a proper indie wig-out.
