Hmm, have seen such damage in used boots and suspect that unscrupulous traders might have some success in filling in the cracks with a good slavering of polish or dubbin. Having slashed my first pair, they shouldn't split further but it may compromise the water resistance.
FWIW, I'm currently living in a pair of baseball boots that cost me a tenner, and hence looking like an ageing Ramone ;~)
