Sock it to me, sock it to me
Y'know, for years I've thought that the reason I always ended up with odd socks was just carelessness on my part, and an inability to do all my washing at once.
However. Our washing machine is knackered at present, and I was running out of stuff. I grabbed some bits and pieces out of the washing pile, and carefully located three matching pairs of socks. I took everything downstairs, washed and rinsed it in the sink. Hanging things up to dry... seven socks.
It's not my fault. The little socky bastards are out to get me.
Irrelevantly, a friend of mine recently compelled her boyfriend to buy what she calls a linen basket. The thing you keep your dirty washing in, anyway. He explained said article to a friend of his: it's just like the floor, except it stores your clothes vertically.

It was, however, news to F that we had one in the sink as well as the washer. We eventually agreed that socks probably snuck in and out of the overflow.

Blimey, your salesmanship is even worse than mine.

I like to do laundry about three times per week just to keep the fug down. There are indeed only two of us and we do indeed have a not-overly-large washing machine. Again while Dr. Mitch is a clothes-horse of the first order, I tend to wear the same 3 or 4 things over and over again, so there is always something in the wash.
Still awake?
Our enigma is this:
1 pair of socks per day per person = 7x 2 pairs of socks per week =14 pairs of socks per week.
3 washes = 14/3 pairs of socks per wash (let's say 5).
Nonetheless, we always have at least 11 pairs of socks in each load.
Oh - plus one odd one...
