Stupid questions you already know the answers to

OK, people wanted answers to the quiz.

One

Garbage, by Garbage.

Apparently, I haven't got the CD right way up in this photo - I'm told the blobby pink bits are actually a blobby G, but I'd never noticed that.

Most people did actually get this one right - or at least the band. I'm intrigued by people guessing that it was Version 2.0 because to me the most distinctive things about the first two Garbage albums were that they were very pink and very orange respectively. (The fourth is kind of reddish, in a less noticeable way, and no one cares about the third, it being memorable only for having funky-yet-annoying packaging which required a degree in origami to extract the CD).

Two

Mezzanine, by Massive Attack.

Only one entrant didn't identify at least the band on this one (though I suppose some people may not have bothered to enter on account of not knowing) which proves somehow that I'm right about this album's ubiquity. [livejournal.com profile] secondhand_rick commented "I knew this would be in the quiz before seeing any pictures", which was frankly a fair comment. It was the obvious candidate.

Three

Nine Lives, by Aerosmith.

This was (I think) the only picture I left a clue in since I didn't think it was perhaps well known enough. The "LIVE FOR TEN" allowed at least one person to guess the album title even though they weren't actually aware of the album.

Four

I didn't really expect people to recognise this image, but I thought the style would be a dead giveaway. Apparently not, though :)

Flip it over, and you get:

The Stone Roses, by The Stone Roses.

One of the biggest records of the mid-late 90s, and a hot contender for my favourite ever album.

(It was pointed out to me that flag image was also the cover of the single Waterfall. I didn't know that.)

Five

0898, by The Beautiful South

There was a late breaking clutch of correct guesses on this one, which relieved me. I remember the face-on-tortoise image being everywhere when it was released, and was vaguely surprised it wasn't engraved on more people's brains. [livejournal.com profile] stegzy did guess "Oh thats that Beautiful South Album everyone has" though, so maybe all is not lost.

Six

If you fliipped it over and added a face, you'd get:

Disintegration, by The Cure.

I said "This album is not as well known as it should be.", and I'm clearly correct.

Seven

Troublegum, by Therapy?

I think I've just uncovered a secret clutch of Therapy? fans :)

I think this album sleeve is great. In case you can't tell from the photo, the CD is printed to look like a dustbin lid, and the inside of the case, once you've removed the "lid" shows the contents of a dustbin. It's great :)

Eight

Elephant, by The White Stripes.

Look, the artwork is brooding red, white and black. It's pretty much going to be the White Stripes.

Though I did like [livejournal.com profile] sushidog's guess that the person on the chair looked mad enough to be Katie-Jane (of Queen Adreena). I approve of the concept of insane ankles :)

Thanks all who played along.

The short version:

1) Garbage - Garbage
2) Massive Attack - Mezzanine
3) Aerosmith - Nine Lives
4) The Stone Roses - The Stone Roses
5) Beautiful South - 0898
6) Cure - Disintegration
7) Therapy? - Troublegum
8) The White Stripes - Elephant

Extremely honourable first place is tied between [livejournal.com profile] smiorgan and ChrisC, both on 13 points. [livejournal.com profile] kauket comes in as runner-up with a very respectable 8.

I don't own a single one of those albums. Nice duvet pics though.

Now, that's a good quiz!

When I get my records over I'll probably do one with vinyl rekerd labels ...

I got given a picture book for my birthday which is one thousand record sleeves. There's no explanation or commentary, just the images.

It's bizarrely appealing for reasons I can't justify :)

Impressively, I missed two albums which I own on CD and have played many times... maybe I tend to have my eyes closed in a blissed-out fashion...

1989 was in the mid-late 90s?

[identity profile] venta.livejournal.com 2005-09-29 06:25 pm (UTC)(link)
I looked at the Amazon date of 1997 and called it 90s without thinking. I guess that must have been a second edition (or nth).

Clearly an album I listened to in school was not even mid nineties :)

I'm a big fan of Therapy?, even more so since we tried to cover Screamager and realised it sounds easy enough and looks easy enough on paper, but it really well-player by Therapy?

When I saw them at the Astoria in London a few years back they came on stage and said 'we're the ugliest band in the UK.' It was true.

That was me...Hmmm sorry

Aaargh - I knew that [Stone Roses one] was familiar...

Not a great score for me, but I don't own any of the albums I didn't get, and I did get all of the albums I do own.

Which is exactly what Bilbo Baggins said during his farewell speech on his eleventhieth birthday if I recall incorrectly.

Think I'd have got Massive Attack & The Cure, but I didn't have the faintest idea about Garbage despite owning it. I'm hampered by the fact that I shoved all my CDs in my parent's loft a couple of years ago though, so the only access I have to all my music is via my mp3 player...

All except one CD of yours, which is on my shelf. If I ever see you again I'll return it :)

The "LIVE FOR TEN" allowed at least one person to guess the album title even though they weren't actually aware of the album.

Of course, if that wasn't enough, 'Nine Lives' is also written across the same part of the inlay card in blue letters, perpendicular to the black ones which say 'Live for Ten'...

I'm sorry to find that I obviously missed the original quiz for this, though, presumably due to being unconnected to the internet and / or busy with Warwick preparation. It's an inspired idea (though I would probably have done very badly on it anyway).

[identity profile] venta.livejournal.com 2005-09-29 06:23 pm (UTC)(link)
D'you know, I'd failed to notice it said "Nine Lives" as well :)

I thought I recognised the Massive Attack one, but I wasn't sure if I was correct. Should have got the Garbage, but I can't remember whether I did now.
