Last night, I managed to reduce [livejournal.com profile] secutatrix, [livejournal.com profile] liriselei and [livejournal.com profile] andykittie to a spluttering heap with a single sentence. I am very proud of this.

However, it seems the reason I managed it is that they were deprived children.

They never had sung to them the song about The Hole In The Elephant's Bottom.

That's the only version I can find online, which is not the version I know - it's quite like it, but it's missing the chorus, and the words, though broadly similar, are not the same.

Note for the mother: do you have a recording of F&F singing it anywhere ?

Update: and if anyone can tell me how to get the mp3 to work properly under Firefox, I'd be grateful. It's not like I particularly want to listen to it, just that it's annoying that, despite me having the correct version of QuickTime installed, it doesn't work.

The mp3? The bottom link in the page? Works fine for me...

Or the "click" button at the top? Which, for me, under Opera says: This page requires that you download and install a plugin, but does not specify which one.

Under Firefox, I didn't get the "click" button, but a "install a plugin" icon, which tries to install quicktime (and fails until I get myself admin permissions).

The URL it's trying to play from is http://www.immortalia.com/sounds/field-recordings/from-internet/00%20-%20The%20Hole%20In%20The%20Elephant's%20Bottom.mp3

When last I upgraded QuickTime, it broke with regard to URLs including apostrophes. Same problem, maybe?

Having installed Quicktime, I had to...

Open QuickTime player
Edit Preferences... QuickTime preferences
Browser Plug-in (from the dropdown list at the top)
Mime Settings (button at the bottom)
Tick MP3 - MPEG Layer III movies and streams

after that, I get a little player control on the web page, instead of the "install a plug-in" instruction.

Best way to play the mp3 is to go straight to the url of the mp3: http://www.immortalia.com/sounds/field-recordings/from-internet/00%20-%20The%20Hole%20In%20The%20Elephant%27s%20Bottom.mp3

I suspect (though I can't be bothered to check) that the embed is just badly done or something. I dunno. I can't be bothered to check right now.

It wasn't F&F, it was Pete Thompson but I think I can remember all the verses and will e-mail them. The chorus is of the Ay yay yay yi variety.

Those of use who did proper Latin (GCE, unseens syllabus circa never mind when) had no problems with the above.
