Everybody wants a piece of the action

This is a fairly pointless post, made in order to see what the score with the new posting form is. Everyone seems to be moaning about it, but beyond it being different, and a little ugly-ly laid out, I've yet to work out why it's so heinous.

If you know, you're welcome to tell me.

And just because I want to know:

[Poll #354591]

[identity profile] al-fruitbat.livejournal.com 2004-09-23 04:29 am (UTC)(link)
But it needs to be Diet Vanilla coke ;-)

[identity profile] venta.livejournal.com 2004-09-23 04:31 am (UTC)(link)
Well, I'm opposed to that on principle.
Is it any less minging than ordinary diet coke ?

[identity profile] al-fruitbat.livejournal.com 2004-09-23 04:39 am (UTC)(link)
It's a bit more vanilla-ey, but the chief benefit is the absence of that horrible tooth-clingly sugar stuff, which means that should you spill some then it dries to a smooth finish as opposed to making everything within reach faintly tacky.

[identity profile] venta.livejournal.com 2004-09-23 04:44 am (UTC)(link)
The chief malefit[*], though, is the presence of the vile-tasting sweetners they put in instead. I'd agree that non-sticky-drying coke would be a bonus, but I'm not prepared to drink something that tastes awful just in case I spill some.

[*]If it isn't a word, it should be.

[identity profile] cardinalsin.livejournal.com 2004-09-23 05:32 am (UTC)(link)
malefit

Surely just as one can be beneficient or malevolent, one can have either a benefit of a malevot. Though somehow malevon sounds a little nicer. Anyway, I must disagree, malefit it a horrid horrid word that should be neither seen nor heard.

[identity profile] venta.livejournal.com 2004-09-23 05:34 am (UTC)(link)
You've got your opposites confuse there - the opposite of beneficient is maleficient, and the opposite of malevolent is benevolent.

Honest, I'm not making these ones up :)

Malevon sounds like a proprietary skincare product, I'm sticking with malefit.

(To be pronounced mal-a-fit, of course, or it'd be silly.)

[identity profile] cardinalsin.livejournal.com 2004-09-23 05:43 am (UTC)(link)
Hmm, good point. However, I still intend to write to my MP requesting that this word not be put in the dictionary.

[identity profile] froglet.livejournal.com 2004-09-23 05:35 am (UTC)(link)
Vanilla diet works suprisingly well. Much nicer than ordinary diet and roughly as nice as ordinary coke though not quite. Vanilla ordinary coke is minging though.

The vanilla is also less minging if you have massive cravings and can't wait for the bottle to cool down in the fridge before you have some.

[identity profile] venta.livejournal.com 2004-09-23 06:03 am (UTC)(link)
I take coke out of the fridge a while before I want to drink it, to allow it to reach the correct temperature. At work I have a tray of vanilla coke (which I kind of acquired accidentally), which lives on the floor under the desk, and is just nicely cool without being chilly.

So sue me :)

[identity profile] cardinalsin.livejournal.com 2004-09-23 04:33 am (UTC)(link)
You missed out "No to Vanilla Coke, no to coke generally".

Touch on the causes of coke ?

[identity profile] venta.livejournal.com 2004-09-23 04:42 am (UTC)(link)
I didn't... I was only asking about vanilla coke, so "no" was adequate :)

Are you telling me you don't like drinking coke but are willing to boil ham in it ? You mad freak.

Re: Touch on the causes of coke ?

[identity profile] cardinalsin.livejournal.com 2004-09-23 05:29 am (UTC)(link)
I would do anything for ham (but I won't drink coke).

Re: Touch on the causes of coke ?

[identity profile] cardinalsin.livejournal.com 2004-09-23 05:35 am (UTC)(link)
Also: I assumed you were interested in knowing what percentage of people disliked the vanillaeyness of the vanilla coke, and weren't interested in people who happened to dislike coke. I now have no idea why you were asking the question...

just because I want to know

...unless its that, obviously.

Re: Touch on the causes of coke ?

[identity profile] venta.livejournal.com 2004-09-23 05:43 am (UTC)(link)
I now have no idea why you were asking the question...

Just because I've been surprised at the number of people who do drink coke who don't like it, and was wondering how widespread dislike was. But mostly, since I like it, I just wanted to know if there was anyone else out there who liked it at all, since I'd kind of like the stuff to stay on the market. Among people who don't like it, I'm not so bothered about why, and shall assume it's malice on their part.

I still remember the bitter disappointment when Hooch's Ginger Brew stopped being made simply because "no one bought it". I did! Ditto the sausagemeat pasties that Nash's in the covered market (Oxford) used to sell - then discontinued because apparently only I bought them.

To be honest, I think I probably assumed that people who didn't like coke wouldn't have bothered trying the vanilla one, so wouldn't actually know for sure.

Out of interest, are there any large corporations who don't have a shocking record for one of more of: ethical treatment of workers, human rights, animal testing, funding of terrorism, just being plain evil ?

It's probably a matter of degree, but Coke are offenders already in my eyes due to their traditional closeness to the Republican party.

Re: Tough on the causes of coke ?

[identity profile] cardinalsin.livejournal.com 2004-09-23 06:47 am (UTC)(link)
Yes that's right, the worlds biggest soft drinks manufacturer says "vote republican!" - there's a recommendation for you.

I think the recipients of their largesse can probably afford to get other people do do the actual recommending. After all, why keep a dog and bark yourself?

THe new update form I only have one complaint with.... I can no longer quickly tab between the subject field and the main content field. I now have to go through all the links for downloading clients and other ways to post... A bit of tab-indexing is needed, I reckon...

Apart from that, yeah. Different layout. who cares? Though I am now a little confused that I can't seem to see any difference between the simple and full pages for posting. :)

[identity profile] wimble.livejournal.com 2004-09-23 04:51 am (UTC)(link)
I've not noticed it being any worse yet (although I don't tab between, so I didn't notice Chris' problem).

What I do notice is that
a) the options fields are now properly immediately below the content field, instead of having a big gap between the two.
b) the preview options works! Although the spell checker still checks HTML.

[identity profile] venta.livejournal.com 2004-09-23 04:56 am (UTC)(link)
I don't usually use the preview option (which is why my posts are often full of typos :), but I tried it this time. It can't handle polls at all, which is annoying because that was the thing I really wanted to check I'd got right.

Vanilla Coke. Even more minging than Lemon Coke.

[identity profile] froglet.livejournal.com 2004-09-23 05:37 am (UTC)(link)
Other way around you disturbed freak :p Lemon coke is the nastiest thing ever invented.

[identity profile] venta.livejournal.com 2004-09-23 05:39 am (UTC)(link)
Just to be retro, cherry coke is pretty bleeding awful.

[identity profile] froglet.livejournal.com 2004-09-23 05:47 am (UTC)(link)
It always sounded as though it was gagging to be sweet and synthetic and horrible so I've never actually tried any. I do like cherries, but they seem to be like strawberries and most of the artificial flavours for them are pretty awful.

[identity profile] venta.livejournal.com 2004-09-23 05:50 am (UTC)(link)
Yup, that's a pretty fair assessment of my (twenty year old) memory of it. That's a memory of twenty years ago, by the way, not from when I was twenty.

You're right about strawberries. Banana flavour, however, is quite nice - bugger all like bananas, but enjoyable in its own right if you don't make the comparison.

[identity profile] froglet.livejournal.com 2004-09-23 05:55 am (UTC)(link)
Have you tried the banana Lilt? It's good :)

And just because I can I'm going to point out that I can actually remember very little from twenty years ago because I was only three :p

[identity profile] venta.livejournal.com 2004-09-23 05:57 am (UTC)(link)
Have you tried the banana Lilt? It's good :)

I have. As I remember I got ver confused by it, because my brain knows that drinks with banananana in should be thicker consistency (like smoothies) and very I was fairly surprised by the banana flavour every mouthful :)

And just because I can I'm going to point out that I can actually remember very little from twenty years ago because I was only three :p

That don't work on me, I don't give a stuff how old I am :)

[identity profile] snow-leopard.livejournal.com 2004-09-23 07:20 am (UTC)(link)
I *like* cherry Coke (but not Vanilla Coke or Lemon Coke), Cherry 7UP on the other hand was vile!

[identity profile] venta.livejournal.com 2004-09-23 05:39 am (UTC)(link)
I don't believe I've ever had lemon coke. Largely because I thought it was only available in diet format (that's all I've ever seen) so I've never bothered.

[identity profile] timeplease.livejournal.com 2004-09-23 06:24 am (UTC)(link)
Can you obtain the same effect using some lemon and normal coke?

[identity profile] venta.livejournal.com 2004-09-23 06:29 am (UTC)(link)
I doubt it - that'd taste like coke and lemon, which'd be nice. I'm expecting lemon coke to taste like coke and something virulently artificial :)

[identity profile] broadmeadow.livejournal.com 2004-09-23 06:56 am (UTC)(link)
Think very strong (fizzy) lemon squash, and don't think Coke -at all-, and you'd be close.

Definitive answers.

[identity profile] broadmeadow.livejournal.com 2004-09-23 06:55 am (UTC)(link)
IMHO: Vanilla flavoured things are generally nice and Coke is quite drinkable, but vanilla Coke is absolutely foul. Same for lemon flavoured things and lemon Coke.

I prefer sugar-free drinks, but Diet Coke and Diet Pepsi aren't very nice either. Pepsi Max is my cola of choice!

Re: Definitive answers.

[identity profile] venta.livejournal.com 2004-09-23 06:58 am (UTC)(link)
IMHO: Vanilla flavoured things are generally nice

I've been having a bit of a disappointment on this score recently.

I like vanilla, it's the finest of the flavours. However, vanilla flavouring is often nasty (qv. strawberries, above (http://www.livejournal.com/users/venta/111091.html?thread=1430771#t1430771)).

In particular - vanilla milkshakes clearly should be nice. However, the two I've tried (Nesquik and Frijj) have both been vile, sickly, overpowering monstrosities. These have left me doubly disappointed - both because they were nasty, and because they should have been so great.

If you haven't tried this (http://www.tesco.com/superstore/xpi/7/xpi56426177.htm) [tesco.com] I recommend you do.

[identity profile] venta.livejournal.com 2004-09-23 07:06 am (UTC)(link)
Indeed I have, and it's very nice.

Though mine was defective and didn't seem to have any bourbons in it.

Vanilla Coke

[identity profile] bateleur.livejournal.com 2004-09-23 07:23 am (UTC)(link)
No discussion of the subject would be complete without the following quote:

"The god of marzipan has vomited in my Coke"
- [livejournal.com profile] _kent, on Vanilla Coke.

[identity profile] ghoti.livejournal.com 2004-09-23 08:31 am (UTC)(link)
vanilla *diet* coke is lovely. normal stuff not so.

[identity profile] bloodnok.livejournal.com 2004-09-23 07:40 pm (UTC)(link)
I generally don't drink Coke (just don't really like the tooth-rotting stuff), but love vanilla. Diet vanilla Coke is rather nice IMO, and works very, very well with bourbon *g*
