Very slightly over a year ago, I wrote:

So, for 2014: evaluate life. Work out how to fit things in to it. Learn new stuff.

At the end of March, I wrote my first quarterly report on the resolution, which decided that progress was, frankly, not brilliant.

Then I didn't write any more quarterly reports, which may give you a clue how things went overall.

This might be quite dull )

So, not a success overall, really.

Things to concentrate on this year:

Find the time )

Sort my knees out )

Plus, of course, I have a minor resolution of drinking nothing but water in January to raise money for WaterAid.

So, the executive summary of the extended waffle about New Year resolutions for this year got boiled down to:

So, for 2014: evaluate life. Work out how to fit things in to it. Learn new stuff.

I figure it's time for the first quarterly report :)

Report! )

OK, this whole new year resolution monthly write-up thing didn't quite go to plan. I haven't managed to do one since September. So, instead we have the fourth quarter report, combined with end-of-year round-up.

Of course, the trouble with waiting til mid-September to write up August, is that you're then suddenly having to write up September about ten minutes later.

I don't have a lot of interesting to report, I'm afraid.

Hmm. It appears to be September 13th. And I have not yet posted on the success of my new year resolutions during August. You know what that means, don't you?

Exactly. There wasn't any :(

Right. I asked, you lot provided, thank you very much. I now have a list of books with which to enliven my 2013. (I think I've caught all the suggestions made in the poll, in the comments or in person - if I've missed yours off, let me know.)

I was wondering how to order them - a surname beginning with W has given me a lifelong dislike of alphabetical orderings. But then I realised: it's kind of irrelevant, since I will doubtless go through them in the order they come into the library, or I fall over them in second-hand shops, or impatient suggesters thrust them into my grubby little paws.

I spend a lot of time on trains, commuting. And a lot of that time I spend reading. I have, however, come to a rather sad realisation: I can't be trusted to choose my own books.

I don't seem to be very good at it )

Accordingly, this year my new year's resolution is to read better books. Which is where you, ladies and gentlemen of LJ, come in. Please recommend me a book which you love, and which I should read. I'd like fiction, but beyond that I'm willing to try anything. It'd be useful if it weren't something which is very out of print, but if you really think it's worth it I'll try and track it down (or turn up on your doorstep demanding to borrow a copy).

Oh, go on, we haven't had a sheep on here for ages. And this one doesn't even require any effort from me!

In 2012, venta resolves to...
Stop cooking with hendybear.
Buy new bendy swords.
Keep my goth clean.
Take evening classes in sedition.
Ask my boss for a winter.
Drink four glasses of northeast every day.
